Kon’s best works are cursed, and this one is not an exeption. It explores a bunch of very complex themes and on the moment where it gets to the point of catarsis, the book just ends because of external problems

I still highly recommend everybody who is into art to read this thing. Of course it is not as profound and genius as Kon’s movies, but it is still a good as his first work with his style of breaking perception of reality. Like in the moments of panel breaking, city background just falling over like it’s made out of cardboard, or even playing with 3 levels of narrative reality

Anyway, this manga ended in the best way it could. I genuenly have no idea how else it might end other than the sudden intervention from boring reality

It’s at the core of art that are most important question is finally asked: “Why am I doing this?”

This is a comic about comics. what can be better? Getting into the deep ends of history and the core reasons behind creativity and art itself, of course :)

Seriously, you think i had renewed this book at the library and still returned it late for “prolonging my enjoyment”? I had read it twice and later torrented the digital copy only to reread it later while taking notes

This volume has my favorite story of the run in the 25th issue. And overall makes a nice prelude to the Our World Under Doom

Moore written better works and modern recolored editions look like they were made by amatures who just opened Photoshop and not original artist

“What publication is even less respected than comic books? One that can make me feel better by comparison?” That’s when it hit me: MAD Magazine

An April Fools one-shot of a bunch of DC’s writers and artists making short comedy. It was pretty hit or miss. A whole lot of milenial humor of “Had we really did this stupid thing?”. A small bit of really smart pages that made me giggle. So yea the cover is not lying, comedy is subjective. And i don’t like most modern comedy because i have taste

I liked Weid’s, Coover’s, North’s and Taylor’s sketches

What a disappointing mess. Ivy was beaten by pointing a gun at her still human heart. And Batman in the end shot her anyway because fuck her i presume. What he expected by that? Snapping last straw between her humanity and godhood? And Bruce got not one but two pep-talks with Gordon and got nothing from them

I understand that Bruce is a deeply broken man at this point going through a couple months of constant mental and physical torture, but this twist from being Batman that is willing to go with more blood than usual to an edge-lord’s view of trigger happy Batman is just idiotic. Snyder has truly messed this moment up and this constant switching from scene to scene gets more jarring with each issue.

At least Ivy’s origin is properly tragic. And most importantly she cannot be redeemed into a hero on a whim due to her obsession with evolution

P.S. Oh no Martha is dead. Who expected it. She is definitely died off-screen and this Tallon definitely shot at her… Come on Scott, this is just bad manners at this point. This trope doesn’t work if you use it as a cliffhanger

Proper status quo Absoulute Superman was pretty good. This small arc continues breadcrumb trail from the Absolute Evil. Hawkman sucks in the best way possible. Clarks daily life is fascinating and shows that realistic and gritty Superman still can and should be a kind person. Parasite given me some long needed dose of body-horror. And Absolute Lex Luthor is a kindest and chillest family guy ever. Untill Brainiac comes to his home

And this part was truly painful to watch. Especially the reveal page on which Lex just sits alone in the aftermath of the massacre that Brainiac done for some idiotic reason. The only thing the open brain accomplished by that was gaining the enemy potentially far worse than any kryptonian

Ultimate Universe (2023)

Why they made this part of Ultimate Invasion into a separate one-shot? I have no idea

But this one was definetly a better story than Invasion. It shows us how Iron Lad and Doctor Doom get their revolutionary crew together. And now Maker’s cabal reacted on his sudden disappearance. Spoiler they gone with the act of domestic terrorism

Most of this issue is about freeing Thor from his cell, well less about phisical cell and more about motivating him to escape and fight for his rightfull right for Asgard’s throne. Thor could escape at any moment and just needed a good push. Also Lady Sif is with this team now, not much else to say about her really. She’s behaving like a tsundere i suppose ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Also Lad and Doom dug out Capitan America

And for a finale, as i previously said, the shadow government had shot New-York from Stark Sr.’s satellite pointing at Stark Jr. Getting three things done at once: discredited Tony and Doom, destroying their base of operation and killing a bunch of civilians as a treat. The last scene with TV broadcast teases Black Panther, minimaly shows protagonist of the X-Men book and shows the inciding incident for Spider-Man, bacause in this attack Harry Osborn’s parents die, and also Aunt May had also died in there :|

Also as a bonus they given us a couple of pages from Ultimate X-Men, and judging by them it seems we’ll get a light body-horror, inspired by works of Junji Ito. Which is honestly the best way to make X-Men in my opinion

Ultimate Invasion (2023)

And so, what exactly does one do with the full knowledge of their enemies and the unlimited capacity to engage them before they even have the faintest idea that you exist?

It’s simple really. Whatever one wants.

This is a prelude for the second Ultimate Marvel Universe. And it was a very average comic. And it is the same situation as with DC’s Absolute Universe.

But the world this book introduced looks promising

And i hadn’t mentioned Absolute for no reason, the main concept of both of this lines is quite similar. Ultimate started a year before though, and how exactly this funny coincidence happened is a very good question i have no interest in answering

So what’s going on in here? The Maker(evil Reed Richards from previous Ultimate Verse) had escaped his imprisonment on Earth 616 and wanted to play God on a biggest scale he had done it yet. He got Earth 6160 and modified it in his own image. Specifically he removed all the heroes and villains from the picture(some got killed some were removed in more peaceful way), divided the planet to 7 territories and given control of them to the most malleable of leftover supes, and for shits and giggles tortured Reed Richards of this world into becoming Dr. Doom using a time bubble

And from other things worthy of my attention:

Tony Stark now has an alive dad who is the Iron Man of this world or at least Schrödinger’s dad :) Tony meanwhile is only an Iron Lad

Only non-evil Russians of Marvel Universe(Colossus and Magik) are now part of Maker’s cabal

Peter Parker was saved from becoming Spider-Man Of course he’ll be given a choice to become one, then he will have wife, kids, student debt and alive Uncle Ben :|

On the world map, that contained the borders of the 7 countries, Vakanda was just standing as a big black dot in a middle of Africa marked as “Undiscovered Territory”

Should you read this book? Honestly, this is a bit more complex prelude than with Absolute. DC did the right thing and you can start at any series without much issue. But Ultimate’s main guy is Jonathan Hickman, a guy known for his very lore heavy run on X-Men, in which you needed to read two series at the same time to get what’s going on in other X-Men adjacent books. He made X-Men into a fucking Game of Thrones with bureaucratic procedures for mutant rebirth

And according to Reddit, this same format is working in here too. It is not a bunch of self contained books that you can just pick up from no.1. It is an anthology series with episodes going simultaneously in different parts of the world. And you’ll need to at least read this book and another oneshot after it to get what is going on in other books.

Simply put: it is kinda like the stucture of MCU, but with comics. And no MCU doesn’t have the comic structure for it’s storytelling, it is too serialized

I currently plan to read Ultimates, Spider-Man and X-Men. And thank god most of this runs are already over and i can just binge them arc by arc

Tropelet Annataz ot ytefas.

As i predicted Absolute Zathana is not evil. She was mindcontrolled by a starfish living in her throat. On literally third page she had coughed it out and ran away

Also this issue had a fight between two giant women :)

And as you could’ve concluded the Suicide Squad that was built up in past issue turned out to be a bunch of incompetent villains. Which was expected honestly. Half of the squad either were gone in first 8 pages or got beaten up by their allies. Cheetah for example was useless and got unceremoniously killed off to introduce Zee’s <evil/chaotic/uncontrollable> ghost dad

The main event of this issue was a fight with Giganta for which, as i already said, Diana had used magic to grow a couple dozen times and give evil giantess an uppercut and subdue her by strangling. It was sick!

The main question for me is mostly how Cale still gets all that government money if she cannot control competent part of her crew and how incompetent does it’s job so badly that i feel shame they should feel? Absolute Universe had set evil triumphing as law of nature, but Diana got problems of same stakes as average season finale of My Little Pony

Which is not really bad, but looking at what Bruce and Clark are currently going through you’ll definitely see how much demiurge of this world really plays favorites with the Last Amazon

In this episode of “Life and torture of Bruce Wayne” we finally have long awaited debut of Poison Ivy. And damn she is fabulous, especially in her true form

This issue has three plots run simultaneously. First is Bruce’s daily life going to hell. Second is Ivy’s origin full of delightful deranged philosophy. And third happens in current time with Ivy taking over the center of Gotham and corrupting it with her idea of “the Seventh Kingdom of Life”

I fell in love with this Ivy because she definitely, without any small print of goodness saying that she is right: delusional in her conquest. Absolute Poison Ivy is no longer an eco-terrorist with good point and horrible execution, she is no longer anything resembling a human being. She became something more in her own eyes and she wants to let this more to sprout and grow throughout humanity. She is a fascinating monster with minimum requirement in origin to still be sympathetic and tragic in her own right

So it would be very fun to see what circle of hell Ivy will make Batman go through and what irreversible damage will be done on poor poor Bruce this time

Honestly out of the annual issue i expected more. Of course it was good to see how much compassion Diana is holding and how she was impacted by her temporary transformation into Medusa. And it was good to see her try to fix real Medusa’s curse after feeling how torturous this form was. But it could’ve been done better

Especially in a way they incorporated Athena. It is truly a great fumble to not give Athena a real true bad action and pretend that she hadn’t cursed Medusa and it was just misinterpretation and lies. She is a greek goddess for Pete’s sake, gods cursing people on whim is kinda the main thing of greek myphos

But the moment then Diana looks Medusa in her eyes and Medusa cries from finally seeing somebody’s living face after thousands of years of her torturous existence. I almost had cried by myself.

Batman – Green Arrow – The Question – Arcadia #2 (2026)

Automation could do the work faster.
We do the work cheaper.

I read this series for The Question and Green Arrow, and i have and idea why Batman is here, but i cannot explain it without swearing :)

This comicbook series is about a liberterian-billionare building the floating city with the power of the slave labor. This is the perfect setup for both Question, who is an ex-libertarian and current street philosopher, and perfect for Green Arrow, his whole character is about fighting capitalism and social inequality. And there is Batman, who seems to be here for company

And i liked this comic, exept for one thing… excluding Batman… this book is too preachy with it’s ideas. I am not going here with grey morals, i very much agree with most of them. I am speaking about lines like “He’s fitting us into his narrative.” and “We are just people fighing back. Because we care.” If this two lines were said by Arrow or Question(esspecially Question) i wouldn’t had had any questions. They both are psycotic in different but fun ways. But it was said by a random guerrilla woman. Why in a middle of a shootout she would say something this simple in this overly complicated way? And that is half of the dialogue here. It just ozzes the energy of “i live in LA and i give a f%@&, look at how much f%@&s i give!” and this lines just need a good editor to either cut em or replace. That is a basic mistake that i did, and i still regretting myself for allowing it. Seriously read my Þe Orb and proove to me that last paragraph doesn’t ruin this short story

And the way the book delt with The Question is great, the writer does well in balancing between Ditko’s psycotic noir detective and O’Niel’s philosophising self-reflecting Question(even if it is still far from perfect). Also this spin-off version of the character is better than modern mainline version(i hadn’t read 52 yet btw)

City of Gods (2026)

It’s a nice city.

This small fan made comic about Marvel Universe. It’ main question stands as “Why heroes had chosen New York”. And the answers we get are all different from different people including the heroes themselves, but most of them boil down to “it’s New York, of cource they live in here”

I loved how this comic handled the cameo/tribute to Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko, esspecially how Ditko gone to the long tirade about how heroes just wanna be above the normal folk and how they all just wanna brag about it with the help of journalists and bla, bla, bla. And then Kirby just says “It’s a nice city.”. And knowing and loving both of this guy’s works, it tracks

And art in this comic is marvelous as well, it switches between Smallwood style retro-modern art by Ribeiro and in-world advert posters by Pessoa. And one posters i would love to frame on my wall but the release is pretty overly compressed so printing it on A3 sheet of shiny paper wouldn’t do it justice

Also i recommend to watch this video by the writer of this comic exactly making sence of putting the books setting in the 60s

It was a nice and simple anthology comic about Wonder Woman. All of the stories had a very different tone, so it gone from pseudo-philosophy on human nature of dillusion to a funny kid story about somebody stealing peaches

I had really liked only the last story in here

Absolute Wonder Woman #16 (2026)

ABSOLUTE ZATANNA IS HERE!!! For whole 3 pages

AND NOW SHE IS A BAD GIRL!!! In a Suicide Squad and her own book was announced. So most likely she is not really evil

AND SHE’S HOT! Which is true

And that is why you should never trust comic book marketing.

Well it was actually expected. It is a first issue of a new arc. So it’s point was to introduse the scenery in which the fight will happen. Also it introduses Aphrodite, who is depicted wearing a classic halloween sheet ghost costume that was soaked during Wet T-Shirt contest. Which is oddly fitting for a goddess of beauty

Also Steve Travor is finally a character. He gives a great speech on a senate hearing about him resigning from the army because US army cannot handle supernatural events that been happening during the events of the book.

Meanwhile Veronica Cale plans to commit act of domestic terrorism using Suicide Squad. Which in this version is consisting of Wondie’s classic enemies and Zatanna. And Zee got and upper hand.

To be continued… I’ll be waiting for next issue, book still works well

Witch Hat Atelier, Vol. 7 (2020)

To get yall to the same page: Witch Hat Atelier is the best fantasy manga in my opinion.

This series had moved my opinion on potencially becoming a teacher from “God no, i hate kids. Flip off” to “Maybe yes, maybe no. The Fate is a funny mistress”.

And this volume gets into history and mystery of my favorite characters: Qifrey and Olruggio. I love seeing this guys doing everything they can to be the best mentors they can be. Qifrey’s internal conflict during this one is finally getting development and his backstory stops being as much of a mystery it was before.

And in later blurbs on this manga i’ll go in full spoiler mode, so either read it with me or don’t look. Manga reads quite fast and with my reading speeds you can get to me in no time. Good luck :)

Never stand behind a centaur!

As you could’ve guessed i don’t realy like crossovers with Batman, i think that Bats is the parasite on any of this crossovers, he always becomes the center of attention, even if he dies he still lives. THAT HAPPENED TWICE!!

But i like Absolute Batman quite much, because unlike his mainline counterpart, Batbuilder has something odd that people call — conciquences.

And this issue is about him dealing with conciquences of getting his closest friends into his vigilante buisness, about him dealing with trauma.

And most importantly, getting kicked by a centaur :)

A long awaited 2 issue crossover arc of Batbrick and Wonder Woman.

And it’s first part feels quite inconciquential. It is nothing but a setup for an interesting part, the part that DC by their tradition given out to Batman…

>:(
